"Back in 1998, Sacramento-based far faced the same dilemma as their friends and fellow hometown innovators Deftones: establishing their genre-defying blend of pummeling guitars and melodic, otherworldly textures as something distinctly separate from the Fred Durst-patterned butthead-rock that was cro-magnifying the airwaves. So when they entered the studio to create "Water & Solutions," which would be far's fourth and final release, the band and mega-producer Dave Sardy (Slayer, Helmet, V.O.D.) threw out all industry trends and conventions and channeled their misfit tendencies into a heavy-music masterpiece, which is still informing scream-sing upstarts to this very day.
Kicking off with the unforgettable lead track "Bury White," which fuses rhythm and crunch into a white-hot supernova tempered only by Jonah Matranga's hypnotic vocals, "Water" accelerates from zero to 60 with the horsepower of an Italian sports car, then kicks on the nitrous three cuts later with the grinding yet surprisingly tuneful "Mother Mary." The needle is kept buried straight through to the ethereal, dramatic closer, "Waiting for Sunday." Matranga has since enjoyed a fairly prolific career through a variety of outfits and monikers including onelinedrawing, New End Original and the (sadly) short-lived Gratitude, but what he and his far bandmates achieved in 1998 remains a towering beacon of originality amid a sea of conformity - and hasn't lost an ounce of relevance over the ensuing decade." - Brendan Manley/Alternative Press
Needless to say, we are beyond thrilled that far has reunited. (You have perhaps recently heard their cover of Ginuwine's "Pony" on Live 105.) Email a friend
